Police Investigating Child Molestation on School Bus

January 12, 2005

NewsChannel 19's Claire Nelson reports

Tammy Rudolph picks her son up from Athens Elementary School every day. After finding out what happened on an Athens school bus recently, she says she's glad her son doesn't ride the bus.

"It's not as safe nowadays as it was when I went to school, so I probably wouldn't let him ride, to be honest with you," Rudolph said.

Last week, police say a six-year-old girl was sexually molested on a school bus, and Athens Police could charge another child with the crime.

We decided to talk to the driver of the school bus where the incident allegedly happened. He says he makes sure all students on his bus stay safe by watching them overhead with his mirror, but some parents tell us they're still concerned.

"It does concern me as a parent," Freddy Webb, another parent said.

Webb's kids have to ride the bus to an after-school program every day.

"The biggest problem there is that since both of the parents in our family work, is that we've neither one available when the buses are bringing children home in the evenings," he said.

Webb says he's going to talk to his children about what happened on the school bus. He agrees with other parents that what happened is terrifying, and he hopes as long as his children are riding on a school bus, something like this never happens again.
